The northern solstice on the earth occurs in June according to the Gregorian calendar. Common are June 20 and June 21. It is therefore also known as June solstice in Western culture. Outside of the tropics, the day of the northern solstice is either the longest day of the year (north of the tropic of cancer) or the shortest day of the year (south of the tropic of capricorn). In the Northern Hemisphere it is called the summer solstice; in the Southern Hemisphere it is called the winter solstice.
