What is Day of respect for cultural diversity Holiday ?

12th October, many countries in the Americas officially celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival to the continent (12th October 1492). Argentina, Venezuela and Colombia were the first countries to celebrate it at the beginning of 20th century. The name of the holiday varies depending on the country. Most Latin American countries call it the Day of Race, while Venezuela changed the name to Day of Indigenous Resistance; Uruguay, to the Day of the Americas; Argentina, to the Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity; and Bolivia, to the Day of Decolonisation. The countries interpet the historical meaning of the date in distinct ways as well. Originally, the date was commemorated as the beginning of the “civilising” of the continent. However, indigenous people see it as a massive massacre by conquistadors and consider their ancestors victims of violence and colonisation. Most Latin American countries are running official meetings, marches and cultural events. Tomorrow at 6pm in the Palacio Pizurno (Rodriguez Pena and Paraguay) the representatives of various indigenous communities will present classes and events in honour of the holiday.
